Become A Handyperson

Umbrella is unique because it matches homeowners in need of help with handypersons recruited in large part from the retired workforce. Retirees have skill and experience, and most are looking for ways to share what they know with others.

Umbrella is unique because it matches homeowners in need of help with handypersons recruited in large part from the retired workforce. Retirees have skill and experience, and most are looking for ways to share what they know with others. Uniting homeowners in need of assistance with retirees who want to help has been a win-win situation earning Umbrella a prestigious Met Life/Civic Ventures Encore Award in 2009, as one of the best programs in the country for people looking to do something meaningful after retirement.

You will be paid $20.00 an hour for the work you do. Or, if you prefer, you can volunteer. No matter what you choose, you will be helping someone in your community to remain in their home. If you are interested in becoming an Umbrella handyperson, please fill out the form below.

What Handypersons Are Saying

I retired a few years ago but was not ready to sit on the couch. I found Umbrella and it sounded intriguing, a far cry from the cubicle world. It has been very rewarding, you can decide what tasks you want to perform, set your own hours and the Clients are SOOOO appreciative of even the little things you do. As for my advice: get off the couch, contact Umbrella, start working a make a difference in someone's life.

I did plumbing for Umbrella for about 20 years. It was a godsend for me as it allowed me to work for myself while charging low rates to members. The staff was extremely patient and helpful and most customers were a pleasure to work for. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to work for them and help people that truly needed a break.

My husband has been working with Umbrella since about 2005. This organization truly addresses the needs of the senior homeowners in our area. All workers are checked out regarding background through the local police department and references obtained. Ron Byrne and his staff run a tight ship. They keep track of what is going on. Any complaints are settled to the customer's satisfaction. Umbrella assists in making some of the less fortunate people in the community have a nicer Christmas through their gift giving. For all the seniors out there that need a helping hand Umbrella is the answer. Please look into it for yourself or your parents. It's one of the best kept secrets of the Capital District.

What a great organization! I have volunteered through Umbrella for several years. By providing assistance to those that can't do what seem to be simple tasks, they are helping people remain in the comfort of their homes and not have to move to care facilities.

I joined Umbrella as a handyperson in 2020, and have been helping people handle problems with their houses for almost a year. The team does a great job ensuring that the handypersons' skills match the jobs, and checking in and maintaining the records about how all the jobs are progressing and closing them out when complete. The jobs run from half-hour GFCI installs to multi-week rebuilds of wooden structures - I had one screen porch rescue that ran over two months! It's a wonderful organization fulfilling an important role in the community by bringing people together and making things better.
